The Lap-Band Adjustable Gastric Binding System was developed in the 1993 by a team of Belgium doctors in an attempt to perfect the use of laparoscopic surgery in obese patients requiring operations to assist with weight loss.

Drs. Mitiku Belchew and M. Legrand began clinical trials in 1993 and by June 2001 the FDA had approved the process for general use in the U.S. and since the Lap-Band's inception over 350,000 systems have been distributed worldwide.

The developers require that surgeons performing the Lap-Band surgery must have previous experience in bariatric surgery, advanced laparoscopic surgery skills, and have extensive experience working with seriously overweight patients.

What the band is:

The laparoscopic band is composed of three parts: the silicon band, connective tubing, and an access port.

The band is placed around the stomach, and the tubing connects the band to the port. The port is placed entirely beneath the skin’s surface and is hidden from sight.

How it works:

Dr. Jayaseelan will use advanced laparoscopic surgery techniques to insert an adjustable ring around the upper portion of the stomach creating two pouches: a small top pouch where your food initially is held and the bottom larger pouch where the food is digested. Saline is then inserted into the port and the band tightens around the stomach creating restriction. It is this restriction that makes you feel full sooner and controls the process of digestion leaving you satisfied longer as well. As you lose weight, the band will become slightly loose making your check ups vital to your success.

Advantages:

The procedure is completely reversible. Unlike many other bariatric surgeries, the laparoscopic band can be easily removed, and the stomach can return to its normal size.

The band is adjustable and during normal check ups can be customized to fit your individual weight loss needs.

Normal weight loss is 1-3 pounds per week. This may not seem like a rapid loss, but it provides a healthy weight loss timeline, allowing your body to adjust to its new weight. This means skin elasticity is retained and with that comes less need for plastic surgery.

Women can still become pregnant after having the band surgery. This allows you to have the life you’ve always planned on, not one regulated by your weight.
In fact, many women find that they become more fertile after their surgery than before.

Considerations you should make during the decision process:

A liquid diet is required before and after the surgery to assist in the surgical, healing, and adjusting process.

As with any surgery, complications may arise and will be discussed with your surgeon during the surgical consultation.

Remember, this is a life-style choice you are making, not a quick fix.

Cost:

The investment you are making in your future is priceless. The fee we charge covers the laparoscopic surgical procedure, the out-patient hospital stay, anesthesiologist charges, and six free adjustments within one year of surgery for a total of $10,200.

Follow ups are the key to having great success with the band, and we encourage you to stay in contact with us throughout this life changing process.
